Prepare an image-generated model for printing

Photo2STL supplies generated geometry. Your slicer or mesh editor is where you set real dimensions, repair defects, orient the part, and choose settings for a particular machine.

Changing the file format does not regenerate, thicken, smooth, or repair the model. If one format reveals a defect, assume the underlying geometry needs inspection rather than expecting another download format to fix it.

Set physical size deliberately

A photograph does not provide a dependable real-world scale. After import, read the X, Y, and Z dimensions in your slicer. Set one known dimension and keep uniform scaling enabled unless intentional distortion is part of the design.

Very small scaling can erase gaps and walls that were visible in the preview. A two-millimeter handle may be printable with one nozzle and disappear with another. Inspect the scaled mesh rather than relying on how large it looked in the browser.

Inspect the mesh before slicing

Rotate the object and look underneath it. Check for open boundaries, isolated shells, self-intersections, inverted regions, accidental bridges, and paper-thin features. Small holes may occur in generated surfaces, but a slicer warning, missing primary feature, or large disconnected section needs repair or a new generation.

Use the unmodified downloaded geometry as your starting point. Photo2STL does not secretly thicken or close the result in the browser. If you repair a file, save the repaired copy under a different name so you can compare it with the original.

Repair only what you can verify

Automatic repair tools may close a hole by creating a flat patch, merge nearby shells, or remove small pieces they classify as noise. Inspect the affected area before and after every repair. If a tool changes the silhouette or fills an intentional opening, undo it and use a more targeted operation.

A practical sequence is to remove clearly detached debris, correct obvious surface orientation problems, close only unintended boundaries, and inspect the result again. Keep the original file beside the repaired copy. Dense generated meshes can make manual edits slow, so simplify only after preserving the features you need.

Choose orientation before adding supports

Orientation changes surface finish, support demand, print time, and the direction in which layers carry a load. Put a stable surface on the build plate when practical, but do not sacrifice the important visible face merely to remove every support.

Inspect overhangs from the chosen orientation. A hollow beneath a chin, handle, arch, or leaf may require support even when the rest of the object looks self-supporting. Reorienting by a few degrees can sometimes reduce a large support scar.

Match walls and detail to the nozzle

Wall count and line width must make sense for the narrowest surviving features. More walls cannot restore geometry that vanished during scaling. If a feature is smaller than a practical extrusion width, enlarge the whole model or edit that area before slicing.

Layer height trades vertical detail for speed. Fine layers may preserve shallow curves, while coarse layers can simplify them. The useful choice depends on the nozzle, printer mechanics, material, and the importance of the surface.

Use infill only where it helps

Infill supports top surfaces and changes weight and stiffness, but it does not correct an open or invalid exterior. Decorative models often need less infill than functional parts. A generated mesh should not be assumed safe for structural, food-contact, heat, pressure, medical, or load-bearing use.

Account for the printing process

Filament printing emphasizes overhangs, line width, layer direction, and bed contact. Resin printing introduces different support marks, drainage, suction, and cleaning concerns. Neither process makes an inaccurate mesh accurate. Use material and machine guidance from the printer and resin or filament manufacturer, then apply it to the inspected geometry.

If you hollow a model, add appropriate drainage and inspect the new interior surfaces. Hollowing creates geometry that was not part of the Photo2STL result and must be validated in the tool that created it.

Preview every layer

Move through the slicer preview from the first layer to the top. Look for floating islands, missing walls, unexpectedly solid openings, unsupported starts, and sudden cross-section changes. Confirm the estimated material and time are plausible before sending the job to the printer.

Save the slicer project when settings matter. A project preserves scale, orientation, supports, and printer choices that are not present in a bare STL. Reopening only the STL later will not reproduce those decisions.

If the slicer behaves unexpectedly, return to the troubleshooting guide. If the mesh is sound but the shape is wrong, a clearer source image is usually a better fix than aggressive repair.
